Common Issues
The Nissan Figaro radio eventually suffers from many problems such as tuner faults, the CD not functioning, no sound, eject problems, preset faults, draining car battery, distorted sound, weak sound from either channel, bulb failure, radio memory faults, control knob failure and CD skipping or jumping, tapedeck auto-reverse faults.
These are the most common ones, however other strange problems pop up now and then, all of which can be solved, some may take a little longer than others.
If you are considering sending us a unit please contact us first, stating what faults you have and the unit serial number (if possible)….
Our Refurbishment Service
Our CD player refurbishment involves..
Stripping down the CD mech (pictured) and replacing the optical
assembly with the original spec unit, these begin to lose the ability to focus properly hence not being able to read CD data. We also repair the circuit board as many of the components that have passed their normal lifespan leak corrosive fluid, this damages the circuit tracks (occasionally beyond repair). The mechanics gears / rollers / solenoids and motors are cleaned and re-lubricated, the units are then re-aligned for data reading using the original service documents. Finally the loading mechanism sensors are cleaned and re-soldered to ensure the CD inserts and ejects discs properly.
Due to the nature of the cars suspension, also the fact that it sits at an awkward angle and taking into consideration the early CD mechanism design, it is fair to say that the units can be prone to CD skip, especially on a bumpy road. However this is just the nature of the car. With this in mind the CD unit has to pass our ‘bump’ test to ensure it’s as skip free as possible.
We have now sourced the cd mechanisms from the very last of the units produced – these were redesigned and are vastly better at coping with skipping issues. We fit these to most units now that come for refurb to ensure the best possible operation of cd.
Our tuner refurbishment involves…
The tuner unit often suffers from components exceeding their lifespan, this can mean rebuilding the circuit board, sometimes early tuner units can be very difficult to reinstate as the damage is usually extensive.
Once the components have been replaced and the board repaired we check all the settings and make sure the unit receives all the frequencies it was designed for. We also fit a band expander as standard. A test on tuner volume output ensures the CD and radio are at the same level. We also ensure the sensitivity of the unit is at its peak, this ensures radio reception is a strong as possible. Lastly we ensure that the unit stores the radio presets once the ignition is switched off. This is a fault that is very often overlooked and actually causes the car battery to drain slowly.
Main Board Refurbishment
All units are tested for equal volume from both left and right speaker outputs as well as for purity of sound and volume level. Occasionally a unit may be putting out very poor sound on one or both channels, this can lead to people replacing the car speakers only to find it’s the radio that has the fault.
Other work that is undertaken
We test the radio backlight to ensure that all bulbs are illuminating and replace any faulty ones. Front knobs are tightened and facia is stripped and cleaned. Control knobs are replaced on request (at extra cost). Sometimes we can replace front facias (when available) at extra cost. We can also add an MP3/IPod module, there is no cosmetic difference to the unit once fitted, the number ‘6′ preset key activates music from mp3 / IPod / DVD / MP4 / DivX player etc.
Return Post and Packaging
Removing the unit is simple, there are 6 screws and 2 plugs that need to be removed. Use a strong box and preferably put that in a bigger box with bubble wrap round the sides……..see the pictures below.
Once it is packaged up give it a shake, if you can hear or feel the radio moving … it’s not packed properly!
When sending your unit please use a recorded delivery service or courier. Remember also to have it insured for the appropriate amount. If you can, advise us of tracking number (where possible) once it’s been sent and also don’t forget to enclosed a brief note with return address and telephone contact. Payment can be cheque, card payment or paypal and is due once the unit is ready to be returned.
